“…To allow the use of UPSIT in countries other than the USA, where some of the test odors may have not been familiar, a crosscultural test (CC-SIT) based upon 12 of the UPSIT smells was developed [61]. Further, UPSIT revisions have been recently proposed in other countries such as Taiwan (UPSIT-CT) [62] and Brazil (UPSIT-Br2) [63]. Regarding SST, in 1996 Kobal and colleagues introduced an eightitem olfactory screening identification test [64].…”

“…Further, this test includes scents which we found were unfamiliar to many Taiwanese such as pizza, smoke, turpentine, etc. 12 It is also notable that TC-UPSIT scores are four-points lower than UPSIT norms in North America among normal populations. 12 In contrast, most of our patients complete the TWSIT within few minutes, and the reagents used are simple and more easily identifiable in a normal Taiwanese population.…”

This familiarity is manifest by a high score (i.e., 47, 48) on the TWSIT, rather than the lower normal score observed with the TC-UPSIT.…”
