A pilot study comparing the use of Thiel‐ and formalin‐embalmed cadavers in the teaching of human anatomy

Abstract: Formalin had traditionally been used to preserve human material to teach gross anatomy. In 2008 the Centre for Anatomy and Human Identification (CAHID) at the University of Dundee embarked on the use of the Thiel method of embalming. The aim of this pilot study was to assess the difference between formalin-embalmed cadavers (FEC) and Thiel-embalmed cadavers (TEC) used for teaching and surgical training. Three different questionnaires were prepared for data collection from undergraduate and postgraduate student… Show more

“…There are accounts of Thiel‐embalmed cadavers being used for teaching of surgical skills, urologic skills and microvascular anastomosis, as well as in human anatomy teaching . In this last study, a third of undergraduate medical students expressed the view that Thiel‐embalmed cadavers made them feel more uncomfortable because of their life‐like appearance …”

“…After that, the cadavers are kept in zipper polyethylene bags. The cadavers can be used for months or years (Thiel, 1992(Thiel, , 2002Balta et al, 2015b). The formalin content of the fixative is drastically reduced, with a final concentration of 0.8 % of the total formula, and thus the odor is reduced (Balta et al, 2015b).…”

“…Thiel is a Bre-usable^cadav-eric model presumed to provide Blife-like^tissue texture and colour, which trainees can use to perform several procedures [4,[23][24][25][26][27]. Thus, Thiel may be more cost-effective than fresh or fresh frozen in the long run.…”
