A Pilot Follow‐Up Study of Older Alcohol‐Dependent COGA Adults

Abstract: Background: Alcohol consumption and problems are increasing among older adults, who are at elevated risk for alcohol-related accidents and medical problems. “…Although overall alcohol consumption typically declines with age (Bobo et al, 2013), those who currently drink exhibited troublesome alcohol consumption levels and problems (Chan et al, 2019), and psychological distress can play a role in hazardous drinking (van Gils et al, 2020). Chan et al (2019) found that, among adults aged 50 years and older who drank within the past 5 years, the three most common alcohol-related problems were spending excessive time drinking or recovering (49%), drinking more or longer than intended (35%), and driving while intoxicated (35%). These common alcohol-related problems placed them at an elevated risk for alcohol-related accidents and medical issues.…”
