A pilot clinical evaluation of oral mucosal dryness in dehydrated patients using a moisture‐checking device

Abstract: This study included 30 patients (17 males and 13 females; mean age, 73.7 ± 13.1 years) who were diagnosed with dehydration based on vital signs, skin symptoms, and blood test findings by emergency medicine physicians. First, the attending physician of our department measured oral mucosal dryness. Subsequently, the emergency medicine physician blindly divided the severity of dehydration into three stages according to clinical findings and blood test results. In this study, the oral moisture‐checking device (Muc… Show more

“…The oral moisture-checking device has already been reported to be useful in the evaluation of dry mouth. 4,9,10,12 In the present study, we focused on the intra-and inter-investigator reliabilities of the oral moisture-checking device. Overall, intra-and inter-investigator reliabilities of values measured using an oral moisture-checking device were confirmed in this study.…”

“…U-WSV- and S-WSV-based measurement methods, such as the spitting, Saxon, and gum methods [ 21 , 22 , 23 ], are widely employed to determine the salivary flow rate. Other methods have also been proposed, including the use of a moisture-checking device to measure the impedance of the oral mucosa, filter paper to measure the oral mucosal wetness, or direct clinical inspection of the oral mucosa and saliva [ 29 ]. Furthermore, scintigraphy, ptyalography, and lip gland biopsies have also been presented as tests that directly evaluate salivary gland function and yield detailed information [ 23 ].…”
