A piezomagnetoelastic structure for broadband vibration energy harvesting

Abstract: This letter introduces a piezomagnetoelastic device for substantial enhancement of piezoelectric power generation in vibration energy harvesting. Electromechanical equations describing the nonlinear system are given along with theoretical simulations. Experimental performance of the piezomagnetoelastic generator exhibits qualitative agreement with the theory, yielding large-amplitude periodic oscillations for excitations over a frequency range. Comparisons are presented against the conventional case without ma… Show more

“…Different types of nonlinear large amplitude oscillations occurring over wide frequency ranges can be seen including 1/2 subharmonic oscillations, chaotic as well as large amplitude limit cycle oscillations ͑LCO͒ analogous to those observed in the bistable beam configuration in Ref. 4. Subharmonic oscillations are confined to a stable state, whereas chaotic and large amplitude LCO for this configuration and control parameters involve snap-through between stable states.…”

“…2-5 So far, bistable cantilevered beams showing a wider range of high energy conversion have been proposed showing encouraging results in this research direction. 4,6 This paper presents a broadband harvesting concept based on piezoelectric bistable composite plates. Bistable composites have been studied in the past for morphing applications due to their ability to attain two statically stable shapes.…”

“…1 Typically, cantilevers with piezoceramics are used as piezoelectric energy harvesters and the source of excitation is assumed to be base motion. [2][3][4][5][6] Researchers have investigated linear 2,3 and nonlinear [4][5][6] piezoelectric energy harvesting under deterministic and nondeterministic excitations.…”

“…Among the most promising harvesting devices today are those with bi-stable configuration, with the possibility of occurrence of chaos [5,8]. A look over the mathematical model proposed by [5] shows incidence of chaos can be directly associated with its parameters and initial conditions, what emphasizes a well-characterization system importance.…”
