This article presents a guideline for the utilisation of the photovoice method to facilitate the collaborative generation of knowledge with migrant domestic workers (MDWs), integrating feminist participatory action research principles that promote participant involvement as knowledge co-creators. The guideline is the culmination of the authors' extensive participatory research with migrant workers, focusing on their mental health and social challenges. It provides a structured, step-by-step approach for conducting photovoice projects, from preparation to dissemination, emphasising MDWs' agency and expertise in their experiences. The guideline is designed to assist researchers, practitioners, and policymakers with essential tools for conducting research that meaningfully involves MDWs, with the goal of informing policies and interventions to enhance their lives and mental health. It is also a valuable tool for community organisations and advocacy groups seeking to use photovoice for social research and advocacy. The authors' collective experience in health research and the arts informs the guideline, ensuring a comprehensive and collaborative framework for its application.

AimInternationalization at Home (IaH) strategies play an important role in nursing curricula to enhance nursing students' cultural awareness in the globalized world. The Community of Inquiry (CoI) is a theoretical framework for the optimal design of online learning environments to support critical inquiry and discourse among students and teachers. To optimise nursing students' online cultural awareness learning experiences, it was timely to develop online IaH strategies based on a sound theoretical model. This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of CoI‐guided online IaH strategies on enhancing the cultural awareness of nursing undergraduates who enrolled in a community nursing course.DesignThis was an interventional pre‐test post‐test study.MethodOne hundred and six nursing undergraduates who enrolled in the course participated in the study. The online IaH strategies were developed focusing on the interactions of teaching presence, cognitive presence and social presence of CoI framework and they were integrated into the course. A previously validated Cultural Awareness Scale was adopted for pre‐post evaluation. Higher scores indicate greater cultural awareness.ResultsThe results showed that there was a significantly higher total score of cultural awareness of participating students at post‐online IaH strategies. To be effective, aligning CoI‐guided online IaH strategies with course content, pedagogy and assessment was shown to be significant. The inclusion of technological elements in related strategies was also critical to engage student learning. The positive change on the total score of cultural awareness suggested the effectiveness of the deployed strategies. In this ever‐changing educational landscape, it may provide insights to educators regarding considering online IaH strategies with theoretical underpinning for curriculum planning and design.

Experiential learning is important in preparing the next generation of public health professionals to address health inequities. Students who aspire to work in community health must learn to engage with communities and advocate for change that aligns with community priorities. Learning about Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) and related methodologies can facilitate students’ understanding of community engagement and community organizing. Photovoice, a CBPR methodology, provides a unique opportunity to understand the lived experiences of participants while identifying community-led solutions to address public health challenges. Photovoice has been used as a pedagogical tool to engage students as participants in reflection, critical thinking, discussion, and experiential learning. However, the peer-reviewed literature often lacks detailed accounts of methodology, and barriers and facilitators to engaging participants in photovoice. We provide a detailed account of our methodology as we co-learned with 23 graduate students as co-researcher-participants in a photovoice experiential learning project as part of a CBPR course at the University of Illinois Chicago School of Public Health. Students reflected on their experience with the methodology by completing a series of fieldnotes while participating in photovoice. Fieldnotes were analyzed using an iterative inductive coding process. We present five themes from student reflections that convey barriers and facilitators to engaging in photovoice, and share related recommendations for using photovoice as a pedagogical tool to prepare the next generation of public health professions.
