Research on the application of 3D visualization and virtual reality (VR) in discrete-event simulation (DES) has received increased attention in the past two decades. The increasing popularity of the 3D display in DES is mainly due to superior display capabilities and the associated benefits that it offers. However, the 2D display also continues to enjoy active use to date, thus provoking some fierce debates questioning the need for the 3D and VR if the 2D interface suffices. Several studies comparing the effectiveness of the different visualization methods also produce different conclusions. This paper undertakes a meta-analysis of the different positions and synthesizes the findings from 162 studies on the impacts of the 2D display versus 3D/VR on user performance on various DES tasks. The results highlight four key findings. First, the perception that the 2D display is more effective for model development is misleading as 3D/VR offers overall better performance and quality of models. Second, 3D/VR enables more effective performance than 2D display for model verification and validation. Third, 3D/VR decreases the time taken for verification, validation, experimentation, and analysis of results, but can increase model development time. Finally, the latent variables such as the application domains and nature of the problems tackled have no direct or indirect influence on the efficacy of the 3D display/VR versus 2D on DES task performance.

In the years, several approaches for human reliability analysis (HRA) have been developed. The aim of the present research is to propose a hybrid model to evaluate Human Error Probability (HEP). The new approach is based on logit-normal distribution, Nuclear Action Reliability Assessment (NARA), and Performance Shaping Factors (PSFs) relationship. In the research, shortcomings related to literature approaches are analyzed, especially the limitations of the working time. For this reason, PSFs after 8 hours (work standard) during emergency conditions were estimated. Therefore, the correlation between the advantages of these three methodologies allows proposing a HEP analysis during accident scenarios and emergencies; a fundamental issue to ensure the safety and reliability in industrial plants is emergency Mmnagement (EM). Applying EM methodology, two main aspects are analyzed: system reliability and human reliability. System reliability is strongly related to the reliability of its weakest component. During incidental situations, the weakest parts of the whole system are workers (human reliability) and accidental scenarios influence the operator’s ability to make decisions. This article proposes a new approach called Logit Human Reliability (LHR) that considers internal and external factors to estimate human reliability during emergencies. LHR has been applied in a pharmaceutical accident scenario, considering 24 hours of working time (more than 8 working hours). The results highlighted that the LHR method gives output data more in conformity with data banks than the conventional methods during the stress phase in an accident scenario.

Improving the success of simulation projects using 3D visualization and virtual reality

Achieving success in computer simulation projects has been a long-standing challenge. A recent study identifies 193 success statements (SSs) distributed across 5 critical success factors (CSFs) and 15 key performance indicators (KPIs) for evaluating simulation projects. This article employs text analytics and sentiments analysis to evaluate the effectiveness of twodimensional (2D) display and three-dimensional visualization/virtual reality (3D/VR) on the success of a simulation project. The study matches the sentiments from the literature selected through a systematic review process against the SSs, CSFs, and KPIs. The results establish that visual display can influence simulation projects in four ways. First, the combined visualization techniques in 2D and 3D/VR affect nearly half of the SSs across all the CSFs and KPIs, indicating an essential contribution to the success of simulation projects. Second, the 3D/VR is significantly more potent and influences more SSs across all the KPIs and CSFs compared to the 2D display. Third, the 2D display affects fewer but vital SSs, CSFs, and KPIs, especially those related to the time-sensitivity of project delivery, offering a logical explanation to the continued use of 2D visualization by simulation providers. Fourth, ensuring success in a computer simulation project requires multifaceted evaluation criteria.
