A Phylogenomic Study of Birds Reveals Their Evolutionary History

Abstract: Deep avian evolutionary relationships have been difficult to resolve as a result of a putative explosive radiation. Our study examined approximately 32 kilobases of aligned nuclear DNA sequences from 19 independent loci for 169 species, representing all major extant groups, and recovered a robust phylogeny from a genome-wide signal supported by multiple analytical methods. We documented well-supported, previously unrecognized interordinal relationships (such as a sister relationship between passerines and parr… Show more

“…1 Phylogeny of the 15 species used in this study. The tree is a compilation of four phylogenies (Stuart et al 2002;Springer and Murphy 2007;Hackett et al 2008;Prasad et al 2009). Branch lengths are best estimates from the cited phylogenies mortem.…”

“…The flexural rigidity in the dorsoventral axis was also determined for jaws of the Double-crested Cormorant, a seabird that is distantly related to pelicans (Hackett et al, 2008). This analysis revealed a flexural rigidity distribution that is clearly not optimized for dorsoventral bending resistance (Fig.…”

“…Cormorants are seabirds that may be distantly related to pelicans (Hackett et al, 2008), and snatch fish out of the water column with their beaks (Owre, 1967). American White Pelicans scoop mouthfuls of prey-laden water from the upper 1.25 m of the water column while floating on the water's surface (Anderson, 1991).…”

“…The phylogenetic tree (Fig. S1) was constructed from four phylogenies from which branch length estimates were taken (Stuart et al 2002;Springer and Murphy 2007;Gorbunova et al 2008;Hackett et al 2008;Prasad et al 2008); however, the analysis was repeated with all branch lengths set to one, as with a speciation model of character change (Price 1997). Statistical analyses within the intraspecies context (Snell dwarf mice) used a two-tailed t test to compare normal mice and Snell dwarf mice.…”
