A phylogenetic and taxonomic revision of sequestrate Russulaceae in Mediterranean and temperate Europe

Abstract: A comprehensive morphological and genetic study of type material and new collections of sequestrate Russulales species formerly belonging to the genera Arcangeliella, Elasmomyces, Gymnomyces, Hydnangium, Hymenogaster, Macowanites, Martellia, Secotium and Zelleromyces is here undertaken, for the purpose of providing a complete taxonomical revision of sequestrate Russulaceae species in the Mediterranean and temperate regions of Europe. As a result, seven distinct taxa in the genus Lactarius and 18 in the genus… Show more

“…Simple, 1-spored basidia are highly unusual in the Basidiomycota , and in most cases species characterised by 1-spored basidia belong to genera with a variable number of spores produced per basidium, e.g., Heteroacanthella , Lactarius , Oliveonia , Russula , Septobasidium , and Tremella s.lat. ( Zamora et al 2014 , 2016 , Vidal et al 2019 ). This result, together with the phylogenetic position of Dacryonaema , allowed inferring the bisterigmate basidium as the most probable ancestral state for the Dacrymycetes in most analyses.…”

“…Russula heilongjiangensis has similar spore ornamentation but has narrower hymenial cystidia on lamellae sides (Li et al 2018). Russula quercus-floribundae has, together with sequestrate species R. mediterraneensis and R. mattiroloana, the largest spores within the lineage, often exceeding 11 μm (Vidal et al 2019).…”

“…As such, the MEL data set elucidates the morphological form of some of our study organisms. Although the majority of sequestrate Russulaceae genera are polyphyletic within the family (Vidal et al, 2019), indicating the need for systematic revision, the retention of "field identification" names on herbarium specimens adds another layer of information to this study.…”
