We discuss the large-x behaviour of the splitting functions Pqg and Pgq and of flavour-singlet coefficient functions, such as the gluon contributions C2,g and CL,g to the structure functions F2,L, in massless perturbative QCD. These quantities are suppressed by one or two powers of (1−x) with respect to the (1−x) −1 terms which are the subject of the well-known threshold exponentiation. We show that the double-logarithmic contributions to Pqg, Pgq and CL at order α 4 s can be predicted from known third-order results and present, as a first step towards a full all-order generalization, the leading-logarithmic large-x behaviour of Pqg, Pgq and C2,g at all orders in αs.

The transverse momentum Q T distribution is computed for inclusive Higgs boson production at the energy of the CERN Large Hadron Collider. We focus on the dominant gluon-gluon subprocess in perturbative quantum chromodynamics and incorporate contributions from the quark-gluon and quark-antiquark channels. Using an impact-parameter b-space formalism, we include allorders resummation of large logarithms associated with emission of soft gluons. Our resummed results merge smoothly at large Q T with the fixed-order expectations in perturbative quantum chromodynamics, as they should, with no need for a matching procedure. They show a high degree of stability with respect to variation of parameters associated with the non-perturbative input at low Q T . We provide distributions dσ/dydQ T for Higgs boson masses from M Z to 200 GeV. The average transverse momentum at zero rapidity y grows approximately linearly with mass of the Higgs boson over the range M Z < m h < 200 GeV, < Q T >≃ 0.18m h + 18 GeV. We provide analogous results for Z boson production, for which we compute < Q T >≃ 25 GeV. The harder transverse momentum distribution for the Higgs boson arises because there is more soft gluon radiation in Higgs boson production than in Z

Abstract. I review the theoretical aspects of the physics of Higgs bosons, focusing on the elements that are relevant for the production and detection at present hadron colliders. After briefly summarizing the basics of electroweak symmetry breaking in the Standard Model, I discuss Higgs production at the LHC and at the Tevatron, with some focus on the main production mechanism, the gluon-gluon fusion process, and summarize the main Higgs decay modes and the experimental detection channels. I then briefly survey the case of the minimal supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model. In a last section, I review the prospects for determining the fundamental properties of the Higgs particles once they have been experimentally observed.
