Lithium-ion dynamics in the garnet-type solid electrolyte "Li 7 La 3 Zr 2 O 12 " (LLZ) crystallizing with cubic symmetry was probed by means of variable-temperature 7 Li NMR spectroscopy and ac impedance measurements. Li jump rates of an Al-containing sample follow Arrhenius behavior being characterized by a relatively high activation energy of 0.54(3) eV and a pre-exponential factor of 2.2(5) × 10 13 s −1 . The results resemble those which were quite recently obtained for an Al-free LLZ sample crystallizing, however, with tetragonal symmetry. Hence, most likely, the significantly higher Li conductivity previously reported for a cubic LLZ sample cannot be ascribed solely to the slight structural distortions accompanying the change of the crystal symmetry. Here, even Al impurities, acting as stabilizer for the cubic polymorph at room temperature, do not lead to the high ion conductivity reported previously.

“…The full width at half maximum value of the dominant central resonance (m = 1/2 ↔ m = −1/2 transition) shows a characteristic temperature dependence according to which it decreases from the so-called rigid-lattice width of typically a few kHz to only a fraction of that width in the temperature regime of extreme narrowing over a range of several hundred K. The actual residual line width is determined by the inhomogeneity of the external magnetic field. The temperature dependence of the motionally induced averaging of the dipolar interaction between the nuclei can be fitted with a suitable model yielding an estimation of the activation energy of the hopping rate of the interacting nuclei [44].…”

This article reports on Li self-diffusion in lithium containing metal oxide compounds. Case studies on LiNbO 3 , Li 3 NbO 4 , LiTaO 3 , LiAlO 2 , and LiGaO 2 are presented. The focus is on slow diffusion processes on the nanometer scale investigated by macroscopic tracer methods (secondary ion mass spectrometry, neutron reflectometry) and microscopic methods (nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, conductivity spectroscopy) in comparison. Special focus is on the influence of structural disorder on diffusion.

We report on measurements of the linewidth ∆f of THz radiation emitted from intrinsic Josephson junction stacks, using a Nb/AlN/NbN integrated receiver for detection. Previous resolution limited measurements indicated that ∆f may be below 1 GHz -much smaller than expected from a purely cavity-induced synchronization. While at low bias we found ∆f to be not smaller than ∼ 500 MHz, at high bias, where a hotspot coexists with regions which are still superconducting, ∆f turned out to be as narrow as 23 MHz. We attribute this to the hotspot acting as a synchronizing element. ∆f decreases with increasing bath temperature, a behavior reminiscent of motional narrowing in NMR or ESR, but hard to explain in standard electrodynamic models of Josephson junctions.
