A perspective on thermal energy storage systems for solar energy applications

Abstract: SUMMARYThe use of thermal energy storage (TES) systems is essential for solar power systems because of fluctuations in the solar energy input. Several classes of storage may be required for a single installation, depending on the type and scale of the solar power plant itself, and the nature of its integration with conventional utility systems. For heating and hot water applications, water and phase change materials (PCMs) constitute the principle storage media. Soil, rock and other solids are used as well. Wa… Show more

“…The motivation for using phase-change energy storage (PCES) is the reduction in storage volume which can be achieved compared to sensible heat storage. Therefore, we used commercial calcium chloride hexa-hydrate as a PCM, for solar energy storage because it is cheaper and has better thermal stability than the other PCMs (GuK ltekin et al 1991;Parisini, 1988;Carlsson et al, 1979;Abhat, 1983;Kaygusuz, 1995a;Hahne, 1996;Dinier and Dost, 1996). It is a commercial grade material produced by the Dow Chemical Company.…”
