Research on the use of the Rorschach in the diagnosis of schizophrenia is reviewed. The analysis of this research (from that done by Rorschach to the most recent) indicates that schizophrenics do not respond in any unique fashion to any particular determinant or any particular card. The research also indicates that the computation of percentages and ratios, no matter how complex, does not facilitate the identification of a schizophrenic process. What the research does demonstrate is that schizophrenia, in its overt as well as latent and borderline forms, is detectable on the Rorschach through an analysis of the patient's thinking. The thinking of the schizophrenic reveals highly personal, illogical, and bizarre associations to the blots. This analysis of thinking is not accomplished through assessment of the formal properties of the blots, e.g., the analysis of response to color, movement, shading, the color-to-movement ratio, or form level (low form level proves to be a function of psychoticism, not schizophrenia, per se) but more in terms of the phenomenology of the responses.

ANDsets of propositions provide the logic and have set the design for Two the two researches concerning which we are today reporting. One of these concerns schizophrenia and is derived from the clinical field. The other consists of hypotheses and assumptions on which the Rorschach test operates-assumptions and theory both with regard to its separate variables and also their co-functioning as the whole personality. Our logic has been, if (a) the propositions as stated relative to schizophrenia, and if (b) the significances we see in the test's operations are valid-then a third proposition follows. It is that certain Rorschach test patterns should be obtained in schizophrenia. From this, two corollary arguments follow. They are (c) the pattern should be obtained in schizophrenia at various levels of involvement and (d) in the different growth stages of children. These are the propositions that we are presently testing out. In doing so we are using the Q-technique. More about this technique later in this paper.Our reasoning is: to the extent that our Rorschach test findings follow certain patterns which, translated from test language into clinical language, give valid clinical pictures, to that extent our present method in the test and in interpreting our results is being verified. A product of this reasoning, and clinically the more significant finding, has been the tracing of certain patterns of reaction in schizophrenia. These in turn throw light on nosological problems in the disease.To test out our hypotheses we had certain material available ready-made. I t consists of a large collection of Rorschach test records, obtained from children and adults. They were taken in the Mandel Clinic (outpatient) and in the hospital of Michael Reese Hospital from patients referred to the department of psychiatry, dating back as much as ten years before the initiation of our research. Second, but not quite so tailor-made for purposes of the investigations, was the clinical information in the hospital charts. This is usually scanty. Third, we had in our files an adequate number of test records obtained from children, representative of the normal population of the Chicago public schools.
