A Patient Outcomes–Driven Feedback Platform for Emergency Medicine Clinicians: Human-Centered Design and Usability Evaluation of Linking Outcomes Of Patients (LOOP)

Abstract: Background The availability of patient outcomes–based feedback is limited in episodic care environments such as the emergency department. Emergency medicine (EM) clinicians set care trajectories for a majority of hospitalized patients and provide definitive care to an even larger number of those discharged into the community. EM clinicians are often unaware of the short- and long-term health outcomes of patients and how their actions may have contributed. Despite large volumes of patients and data,… Show more

“…Arandia, Garate, and Mabe present a methodology for designing and developing embedded medical devices while minimizing economic investment during periods of technical risk and supporting customer feedback [29]. In other cited articles, agile methodologies are used to develop software for crisis management during the COVID-19 pandemic [71] and to improve user interfaces in medical software [72].…”

“…User-centered design is used to design interventions that better serve the community. This approach has yielded much success in areas as diverse as emergency department clinician systems and community smoking cessation counseling [15,16]. The study protocol adapted the process defined and applied by colleagues at the Maryland Institute College of Art's (MICA) Center for Social Design [17,18].…”
