A Passive Network Appliance for Real-Time Network Monitoring

Abstract: Network administrators lack the tools they need to understand and react to their changing networks. This makes it difficult for them to make informed, timely decisions regarding network management, capacity planning, and security. These challenges will only increase as networks continue to gain in throughput, become more complex, and encrypt more and more of their traffic. This paper describes the Passive Network Appliance, or PNA, which is our proposed solution to this problem. The PNA provides snapshots of ne… Show more

“…As stated by Voicu et al [36], network monitoring is a resourceintensive task in many cases. Since the XML and MSC models are created automatically, the high monitoring costs stated by Kuwabara et al [34] and Schultz et al [35] can be reduced.…”

“…Network monitoring is a procedure that can be used to monitor current traffic conditions [32], to monitor multimedia applications [33], to ensure quality of service [34], and to provide a comprehensive view of the networks for administrators [35]. Network monitoring is a resource-intensive procedure [36].…”

“…As such, we have selected a kernel-space based packet processing method and two user-space packet processing methods. For the kernel-space packet processor we are using the Passive Network Appliance (PNA) [25]. The PNA has been previously developed by the authors to facilitate fast processing of packets on commodity hardware and has been proven to handle a constant load of about 1 Gbps in an operation setting.…”
