A parts-per-billion measurement of the antiproton magnetic moment

Abstract: Precise comparisons of the fundamental properties of matterantimatter conjugates provide sensitive tests of charge-parity-time (CPT) invariance 1 , which is an important symmetry that rests on basic assumptions of the standard model of particle physics. Experiments on mesons 2 , leptons 3,4 and baryons 5,6 have compared different properties of matter-antimatter conjugates with fractional uncertainties at the parts-per-billion level or better. One specific quantity, however, has so far only been known to a frac… Show more

“…where Q is a general 4 × 4 spinor matrix involving the covariant derivative iD µ and the electromagnetic field tensor F αβ ≡ ∂ α A β − ∂ β A α . The hermiticity of the Lagrange density (2) guarantees that Q satisfies condition Q = γ 0 Q † γ 0 . In the limit of the free Dirac fermion with A α = 0, Ref.…”

“…Within the physics program of our collaboration we have performed proton and antiproton magnetic moment measurements with fractional uncertainties on the parts per billion (10) and parts per million level (11), respectively. These experiments are limited by the energy in the harmonic modes of the particle in the trap and considerably benefit from the development of experimental techniques that provide a fast and deterministic way to reduce the energy of the particle to E/k B < 100 mK.…”
