The constraints concerning the whole life-cycle of a product must be integrated as soon as possible during the product design process, in order to decrease the final cost and to reduce the time to market. For this purpose, we propose a multi-actors and multi-views Cooperative Design Modeler, named CoDeMo, that allows the integration of different partners during the design activity. Our design methodology proposes the emerging of a product model from the specific constraints, results of the activity of the technologists, the manufacturers or the recycling actors. CoDeMo facilitates the dialogue between the diverse professions with the specification of the links existing among the views and by proposing a coordination system.

According to conceptual changes on design methodology, this paper presents some research results on a new generation of CAD systems. This new software has not to be used to achieve automatic design tasks at all. On the contrary, it has to make part of an integrated design environment. A cooperative design modeller is then presented as a support for cooperative and integrated design methodology in this design environment. It mainly allows every design actors to share a unique database owing to a formal exchange network. The modeller provides a graphic interface to add, edit or modify data. Moreover the modeller manages the shared database in order to realise heavy design tasks as data propagation or data coherence management. The presented modeller takes place in the global design environment connected to specific applications based on specific design tasks (process planning, structure analysis). An informal communication network worthwhile in any design group including human actors also assists the cooperative design modeller.

Designing a product needs to consider, as soon as possible, the constraints due to the different manufacturing domains through a co-operative work of the different actors. The co-operation of the designer and the process planner is aided by indicators of machinability. So that the negotiation between the two actors will be effective. The know how of the machiner and process planner is integrated. The part deflnition, particularly the part geometry, is been added to by proposals of the indicator. A model of an indicator of machinability is presented and discussed. An indicator for choosing or proposing the surfaces adapted to the part flxturing has been implemented and presented here.
