This paper provides an extensive review of the popular multi-objective optimization algorithm NSGA-II for selected combinatorial optimization problems viz. assignment problem, allocation problem, travelling salesman problem, vehicle routing problem, scheduling problem, and knapsack problem. It is identified that based on the manner in which NSGA-II has been implemented for solving the aforementioned group of problems, there can be three categories: Conventional NSGA-II, where the authors have implemented the basic version of NSGA-II, without making any changes in the operators; the second one is Modified NSGA-II, where the researchers have implemented NSGA-II after making some changes into it and finally, Hybrid NSGA-II variants, where the researchers have hybridized the conventional and modified NSGA-II with some other technique. The article analyses the modifications in NSGA-II and also discusses the various performance assessment techniques used by the researchers, i.e., test instances, performance metrics, statistical tests, case studies, benchmarking with other state-of-the-art algorithms. Additionally, the paper also provides a brief bibliometric analysis based on the work done in this study.

The downhole engineering parameters measurement sub is a key component of the rotary steerable drilling system. To enable a measurement sub to serve reliably under downhole complex conditions, the structural parameters optimization of its key but weak elastic cell is systematically studied. First, the multiple relations among measurement sensitivities, structural stiffnesses, and strength during structural parameters design are summarized. Second, the selection of the structural parameters of the elastic cell is characterized as a multi-objective optimization model, which is solved using the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGA-II). Furthermore, the finite element method (FEM) is used to verify the measurement performance and static strength of the proposed structure. Finally, transient dynamics analysis is applied to investigate the dynamic strength of the designed structure. The results show that the proposed parameters optimization strategy can quickly obtain the database for the structural parameters design of an elastic cell. The static analysis results based on the FEM further verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. Transient dynamic analysis also reveals the relative rigor of the proposed methodology framework to some extent. This work has practical significance for improving the drilling efficiency and reducing drilling risks. In addition, this proposed methodology has good extensibility.

As an important aspect of oil and gas field construction, oil and gas field surface engineering often affects the efficiency and safety of oil and gas production, and it requires a large investment. In the past, much work has been done on layout optimization for gathering pipeline networks. However, few studies have considered multiway valves in the optimization of pipeline networks. Compared to traditional metering processes, a process using multiway valves can reduce construction and operation costs and enable automation of the well-selection operation. In this paper, an MINLP model is established in which the number of multiway valves and their numbers of channels are considered special constraints and the number of multiway valves and the associations between wells and multiway valves are treated as optimization variables. A specific heuristic algorithm for solving this problem is also proposed in this paper. We consider the coordinates of real-world wells and of randomly generated well locations as different examples to analyze the performance of this algorithm. These examples demonstrate that the algorithm can initially adjust the network through single-step iteration, while double-step iteration is efficient when all channels of a multiway valve have been associated with pipelines, and multistep iteration can help the objective function escape from local optima. Finally, numerical analysis results prove that the proposed algorithm can be used to efficiently solve the problem of interest and exhibits stable convergence.
