The paper provides with a first assessment on the suitability of Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) as a valid option for Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) in coal-fired power plants. A full-plant analysis of an Advanced SuperCritical (ASC) pulverized coal plant and of an Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) plant, operating with a PSA unit, is presented. The systems selected aim to represent the most diffused options for coalbased power generation, respectively in a post-and pre-combustion application of CO2 separation. The definition of the PSA process is tailored for the two different scenarios considered, starting from the adsorbent selected (zeolite 5A and activated carbon, respectively for post-and pre-combustion). The objective is to investigate the competitiveness of PSA with respect to the benchmark technology for CCS, namely absorption. In order to consider the different aspects measuring the effectiveness of a CO2 separation technique, the performance of the power plants is evaluated in terms of CO2 separation performance, energy efficiency and footprint of the technology. The post-combustion scenario analysis shows that PSA can be competitive with regard to the separation and the energy performance. PSA is able to match the CO2 separation requirements, and the relative energy penalty is slightly lower than that resulting from amine-absorption. Despite that, the footprint of the PSA unit demonstrates to be way larger than that related to absorption and unlikely acceptable. PSA in the pre-combustion scenario returns encouraging results, approaching the outcomes achieved with absorption both in terms of CO2 separation performance and plant energy efficiency. The footprint, even though significantly larger, appears to be reasonable for actual implementation.

It was aimed to derive rigorous momentum and energy balance equations where the change of kinetic energy in both spatial and temporal domains of a fixed-bed adsorption column was newly taken into account. While the effect of kinetic energy on adsorption column dynamics is negligible in most cases, it can become more and more influential with an adsorption column experiencing a huge pressure drop or with the gas velocity changing abruptly with time and along the column. The rigorous momentum and energy balance equations derived in this study have been validated with two limiting cases: (1) an inert gas flow through a packed column with a very high pressure drop and (2) blowdown of an adiabatic empty column. The new energy balance including the kinetic energy effect paves a way for simulating with an improved accuracy a Rapid Pressure Swing Adsorption process that inherently involves a very high pressure drop along the column and requires very high pressure change rates for column blowdown and pressurisation.

Vacuum/pressure swing adsorption is an attractive and often energy efficient separation process for some applications. However, there is often a trade-off between the different objectives: purity, recovery and power consumption. Identifying those trade-offs is possible through use of multi-objective optimisation methods but this is computationally challenging due to the size of the search space and the need for high fidelity simulations due to the inherently dynamic nature of the process. This paper presents the use of surrogate modelling to address the computational requirements of high fidelity simulations needed to evaluate alternative designs. We present SbNSGA-II ALM, surrogate based NSGA-II, a robust and fast multi-objective optimisation method based on kriging surrogate models and NSGA-II with Active Learning MacKay (ALM) design criteria. The method is evaluated by application to an industrially relevant case study: a two column six step system for CO 2 /N 2 separation. A 5 times reduction in computational effort is observed.
