A Parametric Array Ultrasonic Ranging Sensor with Electrical Beam Steering Capability

Abstract: An experimental investigation of electrical beam steering of the difference frequencywavegenerated by aparametric array in air is described. A16-channel phased array system, composed of apiezoelectric micromachined ultrasonic transducer array,ad igital signal processor,a nd ap ower amplifier,w as constructed and tested. The beam patterns of the primary and difference frequencywaves were measured while adjusting the steering angle overthe range of 0 • -40 • .Spurious signals due to intermodulation distortion of… Show more

“…[3][4][5][6][7] Such a phased array PAL has been successfully used in active noise control, 3 sound reproduction systems, 8 immersive 3D audio, 9 and related areas. 4,10 However, existing models suitable for predicting the performance of a phased array PAL are not only limited for far field calculation, but also the simplifying assumptions and approximations deteriorate their accuracy. 11,12 The total audio sound generated by a phased array PAL is not simply the superposition of the audio sound radiated by each PAL element, because this generation is a nonlinear process.…”
