A Paradigm Too Far? A Dynamic Stability Reconsideration of the Social Network Research Program

Abstract: Instead of paradigmatic unity, we call for progressive theory development from a set of core concepts (Lakatos, 1970) comprising primacy of relations, ubiquity of embeddedness, social utility of connections, and structural patterning of social life. Organizational network research can capture complexity and distinctiveness of individuals and networks in terms of mutual constitution and change. The goal is not to delineate small puzzles whose outcomes are predetermined but to signal bold ideas concerning new ph… Show more

“…We focus on these variables because network scholars agree that the two central concepts in network analysis are the structure of a network and the content (substance) of the dyadic ties among social parties (e.g., Burt, 1983;Freeman, 2004;Kilduff, Tsai, & Hanke, 2006;Schweizer, 1997;Tichy, Tushman, & Fombrun, 1979). For instance, Tichy et al (1979) described the transactional content of network ties as elementary properties of social networks.…”

“…Study contexts include competition in the biotechnology industry (Powell et al, 1996) and the semiconductor industry (Podolny et al, 1996), structure of the corporate elite in Germany (Kogut and Walker, 2001), innovation in the software industry (Iyer et al, 2006), and configurations of global manufacturing networks (Vereecke et al, 2006). Kilduff et al (2006) identifies several core ideas in this stream of research: the importance of relations between organizational actors (e.g. individuals, groups, business units, firms), the embeddedness of organizational actors in network contexts (e.g.…”

“…Em cada um dos diferentes aspectos da vida, há uma ou várias redes nas quais as pessoas se encontram inseridas em relacionamentos sociais interativos de múltiplos níveis (Kilduff, Tsai, & Hanke, 2006). Tais relações sociais se mostram dinâmicas em termos, principalmente, estruturais, nos quais os laços que se estabelecem entre as pessoas podem apresentar diferentes pesos ou forças (Granovetter, 1973), bem como direções, assim, indicando poder ou influência.…”
