A pair of particles in inertial microfluidics: effect of shape, softness, and position

Abstract: Lab-on-a-chip devices based on inertial microfluidics have emerged as a promising technique to manipulate particles in a precise way. Here, we study the coupled dynamics of soft-particle pairs.

“…While conventional inertial microfluidic applications manipulate soft capsules and solid particles using the inertial lift force (see, for example, Ref. [ 16 ]), in this article we focused on multi-component flows in the inertial regime. Concretely, we studied the motion of a liquid sheet at the center of a microchannel surrounded by a flowing liquid of larger viscosity and monitored its instability towards traveling interfacial waves and droplet breakup.…”

“…Their flows at moderate Reynolds numbers enable high throughput and inertial focusing [ 7 , 8 ] in order to develop manipulation techniques for biomedical applications. Motivated by this, a plethora of research has been carried out on inertial microfluidics in the last decade [ 9 13 ] including our own studies on the manipulation of soft capsules and solid particles using the inertial lift force [ 14 16 ].…”

“…As illustrated in Figure D, the flow field in the microchannel is evolved by the LBM, while the particle model is constructed using the FEM. The velocity of the flow field node and the force of the particle node are coupled via the IBM to transfer the interaction between particle and fluid. , …”

“…Here, however, not only the link between shape, material properties (deformability) and fluid dynamics plays a role, but also the influence of the surrounding walls. 8–11…”

“…Here, however, not only the link between shape, material properties (deformability) and fluid dynamics plays a role, but also the influence of the surrounding walls. [8][9][10][11] While the literature regarding the dynamics of rigid particles is vast and consolidated, the research and knowledge regarding the dynamics of elastic particles is still incomplete in places and it remains of great interest to the scientific community. 7,12 Even comparatively simple particle dynamics, such as the sedimentation of elastic spheres in an unbounded fluid, is only described in basic theory or is based on numerical calculations.…”
