A pair of floral regulators sets critical day length for Hd3a florigen expression in rice

Abstract: The critical day length triggering photoperiodic flowering is set as an acute, accurate threshold in many short-day plants, including rice. Here, we show that, unlike the Arabidopsis florigen gene FT, the rice florigen gene Hd3a (Heading date 3a) is toggled by only a 30-min day-length reduction. Hd3a expression is induced by Ehd1 (Early heading date 1) expression when blue light coincides with the morning phase set by OsGIGANTEA(OsGI)-dependent circadian clocks. Ehd1 expression is repressed by both night break… Show more

“…(Supplemental Figures 5A and 5B). We also observed that the expression of Heading date 3a (Hd3a), Early heading date 1 (Ehd1), and RICE FLOWERING LOCUS T1 (RFT1), critical genes known to promote flowering in rice (Doi et al, 2004;Komiya et al, 2009;Itoh et al, 2010), were significantly downregulated in osnrt1.1a mutants ( Figure 6D). Furthermore, the expression of both OsNRT1.1A and Hd3a in the wild type was dramatically repressed by high N treatment, which is in accordance with the late-flowering phenotype caused by high N application (Supplemental Figures 5C to 5E).…”

“…4c). However, the expression level of Ghd7 (Doi et al 2004;Itoh et al 2010) increased significantly only in Ubi1::OsNF-YC2:GFP plants, suggesting that the OsNF-YC2 protein may also promote the expression of the Ghd7 gene, which then reduces the expression of Ehd1, Hd3a, and RFT1s under LD conditions (Fig. 4a).…”

“…In LD conditions Hd1 acts as a flowering repressor inhibiting Hd3a expression but promotes its expression and subsequent flowering in SD [41]. Ghd7 is a small protein with a CCT-domain that represses Ehd1 expression and downstream Hd3a/RFT1 expression in LD conditions to delay flowering [42][43][44][45]. Recent studies demonstrated that the interaction between Ghd7 and Hd1 can play a critical role in repressing Ehd1.…”

“…The plant circadian system consists of biochemical timing mechanisms that temporarily modulate the function of several signalling pathways to measures changes in day-length and promote suitable timing of flowering to maximize reproductive success [2,3,6,7,9,10,[13][14][15]21,24,26,28,29,31,36,38,41,42,46,48,49,[56][57][58][59][60][61][62][63][64][65][66]. The photoperiod response on flowering time varies among grasses.…”
