A One-Hour Practical Lab Exam for Organic Chemistry

Abstract: A lab practical exam for second-year organic chemistry is presented that tests multiple lab skills and theory that the students have acquired directly from laboratory experiences. This exam motivates students to learn lab skills and is an effective end-of-term test for many of those skills.

“…The work outlined above has informed the design of activities used in the approach described in this work. It is worth mentioning here that other authors that have described the assessment of practical work include the assessment of practical work in high school settings using several stations, (Rhodes, 2010) and a practical exam where students must have competencies to complete the tasks required (Neeland, 2007). However, the direct observation of practical skills for the purpose of assessment appears to be limited to very few reports.…”

“…Safety in chemical laboratories is a serious business, but the training for it does not have to be dull, boring, and grinding. By injecting a fun, light-hearted element into this exercise, we believe we have created an examination that students will remember long after their class is completed, and that will impart ideas they can take into academic, corporate, and government laboratories where they will work in their futures. ,, Future versions of the practical will include a more direct link to the ACS R.A.M.P.…”

“…The authors have for several years had a safety class as part of their undergraduate and graduate curriculum. What is described here is one portion of the final examination for the course. However, it can be incorporated in whole or in part to other courses in the chemistry curriculum.…”

“…Both the GCL-I and OCL-II courses typically conclude with a practical exam. Different approaches were taken by each course to replace these exams because GCL-I uses a traditional points-based grading system, whereas OCL-II uses a specifications grading system. , However, the widespread social uprising that occurred in late May and early June of 2020 in response to the deaths of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, and others necessitated alterations to our plans. Many of our students were directly impacted by the widespread protests and media reporting.…”
