A Nurse-Led Voiding Algorithm for Managing Urinary Retention After General Thoracic Surgery

Abstract: Background Untreated postoperative urinary retention (POUR) leads to bladder overdistension. Treatment of POUR involves urinary catheterization, which predisposes patients to catheter-associated urinary tract infections. The hospital’s rate of POUR after lobectomy was 21%, exceeding the Society of Thoracic Surgeons’ benchmark of 6.4%. Nurses observed that more patients were being catheterized after implementation of a newly revised urinary catheter protocol. … Show more

“…Most studies reported gastric POCUS performed by physicians (ED, intensivists, pediatricians, surgeons, anesthesiologists), but its use could be extended to other healthcare professionals like specialist nurses and advanced nurse practitioners who spend more time at the bedside (especially in the PICU and NICU), and manage NGT placement, and also potentially assess stomach volume and reduce fasting times for common planned procedures. Indeed, nurse-led urinary output algorithms have already been published using POCUS bladder scanning ( 95 ).…”

“…До начала использования описанного метода частота задержки мочи после лобэктомии составляла 21%, однако результаты работы показали снижение данного показателя до 8%. Таким образом, рутинное выполнение УЗИ мочевого пузыря медсестрами позволяет снизить количество постоперационных осложнений, таких как задержка мочи [51].…”
