A Numerical Study on the Effect of Water Addition on NO Formation in Counterflow CH4/Air Premixed Flames

Abstract: The effect of water addition on NO formation in counterflow CH4/air premixed flames was investigated by numerical simulation. Detailed chemistry and complex thermal and transport properties were employed. The results show that the addition of water to a flame suppresses the formation of NO primarily due to the flame temperature drop. Among a lean, a stoichiometric and a rich premixed flame, the effectiveness of water addition is most significant for the stoichiometric flame and least for the rich flame, since … Show more

“…Steam dilution is however less commonly investigated because of significant experimental difficulties to accurately control the quantity of steam injected in the reactive mixtures. Steam addition has soon been identified as a successful way to lower pollutant emissions -especially NO x emissions -in gas turbines operating both in premixed and non-premixed modes [27][28][29][30][31][32][33]. This is particularly attractive when considering the continuous developments in Humid Air Turbine (HAT) cycles.…”

“…The influence on the reaction kinetics leads to a change in the radical pool, this has an effect on the chemical 𝑁𝑂 formation. An extension has been shown by Goeke et al (Goeke et al, 2013) in an experimental study. With a swirl-stabilized premixed burner, the flame is analyzed at steam-to-air-ratio up to 25 %.…”

“…If the Zeldovich mechanism is considered in a wet combustion, it follows with 𝐻 𝑂, the static temperature is reduced by the higher specific isobaric heat capacity. Therefore, the 𝑁𝑂 production is inhibited (Goeke, 2012).…”
