A novel waveguide-to-microstrip transition for millimeter-wave module applications

Abstract: A novel waveguide-to-microstrip transition is developed using a new design methodology based on iris coupling. Key features of the design are a single-layer substrate, new matching topology, and new cavity enclosure. The transition lends itself to a low-cost implementation, while maintaining the enclosure's hermetic integrity. An extensive tolerance study shows that the present design is robust and very stable with respect to manufacturing and assembly variations. Careful consideration has been given to the me… Show more

“…This is a very important characteristic since it allows, if needed, a protected and controlled atmosphere to be maintained in the electronic part. The design presented in [1] and its microstrip-to-RW version [7] are airtight, as is the more complex design [8], whereas most of the others are not [2][3][4][5][6].…”

“…The transmission-line approach of left-handed materials introduced in [1][2][3][4] has paved the way for several novel concepts and applications of left-handed transmission materials [5]. A purely left-handed transmission line is nonphysical and therefore cannot be fabricated.…”

“…With the development of communications and sensing applications, optical filters are becoming more and more important and are being widely applied in many fields, such as wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) [1], wavelength conversion [2], and light sources [3]. Therefore, much interest is focused on optical filters in the field of optics communications.…”

“…Also, a microstrip-line fed resonant slot has very high series impedance. To reduce this impedance one can offset the feed line from the centre of the slot or use matching transformers as in [14]. However, about half of the input power will be radiated at the microstrip side of the structure [13].…”
