a b s t r ac tThis work is an experimental study on the extraction of Cr(VI) ions from aqueous acidic solutions using a flat sheet supported liquid membrane. Sunflower oil used as alternative solvent due to the stricter environmental regulations. Aliquat 336 and NaOH solution were employed as carrier and stripping agent. A hydrophobic microporous polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) support was impregnated with liquid membrane consist of solvent and carrier. The Cr(VI) pass through the supported liquid membrane from aqueous feed phase to the stripping phase by means of diffusion. Hydrochloric acid (HCl) was used to regulate the feed phase pH. The efficiency of the extraction was optimized as a function of the various parameters: Feed pH, stripping phase (NaOH) concentration, feed concentration, and carrier concentration. The maximum separation of Cr(VI) was about 95.2% in 10 h. Also, the results of experiments were compared with other organic solvents such as kerosene, n-octanol, dodecane, and tetrahydrofurane (THF) to evaluate the efficiency of sunflower oil. Results indicated that Cr(VI) extraction is on average about 0.5%-55% higher with sunflower oil. The optimum conditions were achieved as: pH = 2, NaOH = 0.1 M, feed concentration = 25 ppm, and Aliquat 336 = 35% v/v. The results indicate that the Cr(VI) ions can be efficiently transported through the SLM by using Aliquat 336 dissolved in sunflower oil as a green solvent.

This study is to perform the comprehensive investigation of PVC based ionic plasticized membrane (IPM) production by using room temperature ionic liquid (RTIL)‐based additives and the membrane application of selective Cr(VI) removal. Some significant parameters related to membrane structures that are membrane thickness, plasticizer rate, and type, RTILs rate, and type, the average molecular weight of PVC were studied to define the excellent polymeric membrane film composition. After that, the PVC based polymeric film used in the Cr(VI) transport and initial mass transfer coefficient (Jo) were about 3.57 × 10−7 mol s−1 m−2 by decyl substituted RTIL as an additive. Also, optimized membrane transport process has been considered as selective enough for Cr(VI) in the presence of the other heavy metal ions. Surface characterizations of the membranes have been performed to clarify the structural and the morphological assessment of IPMs at initial and end of Cr(VI) transport by SEM‐EDX, AFM, contact angle measurement and found a good relationship between the molecular structure of RTIL additive and membrane morphology. As we know that lots of researchers are still trying to find environmentally friendly, inexpensive and straightforward processes to remove toxic substances from industrial effluents or natural sources. At that point, our results can open a gate for cheap, novel and environmentally friendly Cr(VI) removal by PVC based membrane. J. VINYL ADDIT. For the in situ resource utilization (ISRU) of asteroids, the cost–mass conundrum needs to be solved, and technologies may need to be conceptualised from first principals. By using this approach, this Review seeks to illustrate how chemical process intensification can help with the development of disruptive technologies and business matters, how this might influence space‐industry start‐ups, and even industrial transformations on Earth. The disruptive technology considered is continuous microflow solvent extraction and, as another disruptive element therein, the use of ionic liquids. The space business considered is asteroid mining, as it is probably the most challenging resource site, and the focus is on its last step: the purification of adjacent metals (cobalt versus nickel). The key economic barrier is defined as the reduction in the amount of water used in the asteroid mining process. This Review suggests a pathway toward water savings up to the technological limit of the best Earth‐based processes and their physical limits.
