A novel variant of the Savitzky-Golay filter for spectroscopic applications

Abstract: The author describes a novel variant of the Savitzky-Golay filter. By studying the underlying principles of the Savitzky-Golay filter a digital filter has been designed which improves the low-pass filter characteristics, whilst maintaining the 'shape'-conserving features of the original method. This novel variant is compared with the original method and a standard method of improving the low-pass characteristics, namely multiple applications of the original method. The variant incurs a similar computational ov… Show more

“…Then, pfalse(λfalse) can be expressed as pfalse(λfalse)=k=0TakλkSpectral data x2false(λfalse) were weighted and averaged during the convolution calculation. The baseline drift phenomenon of spectrum signal was suppressed [27, 28], so an effective baseline correction pfalse(λfalse) of x2false(λfalse) was achieved. Characteristic wavelength of arc can be obtained according to the maximum point of pfalse(λfalse).…”

“…An additional improvement can be obtained by increasing the number of points utilized in filtering, or increasing the number of filtering, or using a windowed version of Savitzky-Golay filters. 20 Even if we remove ''bad'' points from the Arrhenius analysis, we can still observe small oscillations in the Arrhenius plot which are due to noise component. It is obvious that both the number of ''bad'' points and the magnitude of oscillations are increasing with the increase of the noise component.…”
