A novel two-way-controllable magneto-rheological fluid damper

Abstract: In this paper, a disc type, radial flow-mode magneto-rheological (MR) fluid damper comprising a permanent magnet and an electromagnet is designed, built and tested. The proposed MR fluid damper has an MR valve with which two-way controllability through cancellation or enhancement of the magnetic field is obtained. This added feature provides damping forces less than or greater than that of a passive viscous original equipment manufacturer damper. A three-dimensional electromagnetic finite element analysis has … Show more

“…Following similar principles, a damper with single-stage flow mode was also proposed by Aydar in 2010, shown in Figures 32(a) and 32(b) [91]. Unlike the structure mentioned in Figure 31 [80], two coils and a permanent magnet are adopted in this damper so that the magnetic field strength in radial channels can be further enhanced, thus expanding a damping ratio.…”

“…In fact, structures mentioned in Figures 31 [80] and 32 [91] can be arranged inside a damper or outside the body of a damper. e specific layout depends on other considerations such as the manufacture, heat dissipation, volume, cost, etc.…”

“…The device was designed to engage and disengage a power brake vacuum pump from a diesel engine. A Two-way MR fluid valve using a permanent magnet and a coil was discussed in [3]. The drawback of this design was the location of the permanent magnet that required the rated current of the coil to be carefully chosen in order not to outdo the coercivity of the PM.…”

“…As an alternative to these solutions, an exciter system, based on permanent magnets (PM), can be used. However, very few solutions using such kind of excitation have been developed in the past [31]- [40]. Although some of these devices operate quite well, some configurations present drawbacks.…”

“…In [40], the authors have explored the possibility of using a combined PM-coil exciter in order to control the magnetic field inside the fluid. The system is arranged to operate as follows: the MR clutch transmits the torque by using only the bias field of a permanent magnet that assures the fluid proper excitation (in this condition the coil is not fed).…”
