A Novel Triangular Macrocyclic Compound, [(tmeda)Pt(azpy)]3(PF6)6·13H2O (tmeda: Tetramethylethylenediamine, azpy: 4,4′-Azopyridine)

Abstract: A novel triangle-shaped macrocyclic complex, [(tmeda)Pt(azpy)]3(PF6)6·13H2O (tmeda: tetramethylethylenediamine, azpy: 4,4′-azopyridine) has been successfully synthesized via self-assembly of [(tmeda)PtCl2] with a bulky capping ligand, tmeda and flexible organic linker, azpy. 1H NMR results show the realization of a triangle-shaped complex as a major component of the self-assembly. The single-crystal X-ray study shows its shape to be an equilateral triangle with ca. 2.1 nm sides.

“…A recent example of this is the [3 + 3] triangular metallacycle described by Otsubo, Kitagawa, and coworkers, containing tetramethylethylenediamine-capped Pd(II) nodes bridged by 4,4′-azopyridine (Figure 1). 23 The same strategy applies to 3D cages, as exemplified by the small prism described by Habata and co-workers. 24 The ligands used as caps are by no means limited to these classes, however.…”

“…The first example was the landmark report by Fujita and coworkers, on the formation of a metallosupramolecular square formed from bis ‐monodentate ligands and a bidentate ligand capping off two cis ‐sites on the metal ion . This ‘ligand‐directed’ approach has been subsequently used to generate squares, triangles and rectangles, as well as three dimensional cages . As with the 1 , 1 , 1 , 1 system, numerous reviews on assemblies of this sort are readily available…”
