A Novel Transfer Hydrogenation with High Hydrogen Utilization for the Hydrogenation of Halogenated Nitrobenzene without Hydrodehalogenation

Abstract: In the novel catalytic transfer hydrogenation, 12 active hydrogen (H * ) can be transferred from water/ ethanol system as the efficient hydrogen donor and used directly for the hydrogenation of halogenated nitrobenzene over Ru-Fe/C catalyst, obtaining o-chloroaniline (o-CAN) with 98.0% selectivity at 99.8% conversion without hydrodehalogenation. Most other halogenated nitrobenzenes were reduced with selectivity [98%, and conversion [99.0%. Moreover, the Ru-Fe/C catalyst was still active after reaction for 480 … Show more

“…Transfer hydrogenation of halogenated nitrobenzene was more challenging due to dehalogenation. 16 However, in our system the reactions of halogenated nitrobenzenes such as p-chloronitrobenzene and p-iodonitrobenzene were found to be promoted under the investigated reaction conditions to afford the desired products in excellent yields with 499% selectivity (Table 1, entries 26 and 27).…”

“…Moreover, the high ethanol concentrations enhanced its competitive adsorption for active sites over m-CNB and thereby inhibited hydrogenation [37]. The increase in water content can promote H 2 production and reduce CO with APR and WGS reactions [44]. However, with further water addition, the water insolubility of m-CNB would reduce the solubility in the water-ethanol system.…”

“…Furthermore, the selective transfer hydrogenation of halonitroarenes promoted by transition metal catalysts in the presence of different hydrogen donors such as alcohols or formic acid and its salts has been reported [27,28]. Of remarkable interest is the novel transfer hydrogenation system developed by Yan and coworkers [29]. In this protocol, twelve “active hydrogens” can be transferred from water/ethanol system as the efficient hydrogen donor and used directly for the hydrogenation of halogenated nitrobenzene over Ru-Fe/C catalyst, obtaining o -chloroaniline with 98.0% selectivity at 99.8% conversion without dehalogenation.…”
