A Novel Theanine Complex, Mg-L-Theanine Improves Sleep Quality via Regulating Brain Electrochemical Activity

Abstract: Graphical AbstractThe effects of Mg-L-Theanine on brain electrochemical activity, antioxidant enzymes and sleep. Mg-L-Theanine increases sleep duration, slow waves powers, GABAergic and serotonergic receptor expressions, dopamine, melatonin, and serotonin levels, and antioxidant enzyme activity.

“…Conversely, both 100 and 300 mg/kg doses of VA increased the serotonin, dopamine, and melatonin levels in serum compared to the caffeine group. Similarly to these results, our earlier study showed that L-theanine could affect accordingly in terms of these hormone level changes [26].…”

“…Therefore, L-theanine can be advised to ameliorate sleep duration in individuals consuming excessive amounts of coffeine. A study performed on animals by Dasdelen et al (2022) depicted L-theanine as well as Mg-Ltheanine (a novel complex of L-theanine with magnesium) induced slow-brain waves, regulated brain electrical activity and increased GABA neurotransmitter and receptor level. It was concluded that L-theanine reverses the impact of caffeine on sleep disturbance [30].…”

“…L-theanine also acts as a relaxant by increasing GABA release, which in turn increases dopamine expression in the brain [13]. Widely used for sleep disorders and stress mitigation, L-theanine is able to counteract caffeine with its calming effect [14].…”
