A novel software framework for teaching aircraft dynamics and control

Abstract: Aircraft dynamics and control (ADC) is a core course requirement for an undergraduate program in aeronautical engineering. This article presents an undertaking that reconfigures the instruction of fundamental concepts in ADC by replacing traditional problem-solving approach with a method that relies on a simulation framework comprising of Matlab, USAF DATCOM, and flight simulation software. The typical challenges experienced by students including their inability to visualize complicated, multi-modal aircraft w… Show more

“…Simulation program refers to certain software system enabling educators to create imaginary situations, events or objects representing the real ones when it is not possible to carry out teaching by referring to real events, situations, and objects. When it is considered in the sense of educational view, simulation programs enable us to create such virtual situations/events on computer environment; thus making education processes more effective and efficient .…”

“…Teaching concepts that involve motion or dynamics through computer simulation and using visual tools in computer environment has been steadily increasing. For example, Shankar et al developed a software platform to teach about aircraft dynamics. Lee et al and Deliktas also developed test‐bed solutions to teach engineering mechanics and especially dynamics.…”

“…Juan Manuel Ramirez‐Cortes et al designed an interactive educational tool for compensators using MATLAB® control toolbox. And Praveen Shankar et al presented an undertaking that reconfigures the instruction of fundamental concepts in aircraft dynamics and control by replacing traditional problem‐solving approach with a method that relies on a simulation framework comprising of Matlab, USAF DATCOM, and flight simulation software. Nevertheless, these works are mainly based on non‐universal and complex GUI in Matlab, which requires the coordination of callback functions and software interface to achieve the desired functions.…”
