A Novel, Smartphone-Based, Teleophthalmology-Enabled, Widefield Fundus Imaging Device With an Autocapture Algorithm

Abstract: Purpose Widefield imaging can detect signs of retinal pathology extending beyond the posterior pole and is currently moving to the forefront of posterior segment imaging. We report a novel, smartphone-based, telemedicine-enabled, mydriatic, widefield retinal imaging device with autofocus and autocapture capabilities to be used by non-specialist operators. Methods The Remidio Vistaro uses an annular illumination design without cross-polarizers to eliminate Purkinje refle… Show more

“…Limitations in the degree field of view, when considering nonmydriatic options, make these devices more suited to particular disease processes where the view of the macula and optic disc is most important [ 63 ]. By utilizing the post-processing capabilities of the smartphone, multiple images may be spliced together, providing a high-quality 100° image [ 64 ]. The development of wide-field imaging is a potential solution to this limitation, which has received great attention during the past several years.…”

“…With a combination of a battery, an LED light source, a barrier, and an excitation filter fitted to an iPhone, Suto et al also demonstrated for the first time that fundus FA can be captured with a smartphone, producing images comparable to those obtained by indirect ophthalmoscopy ( 437 ). More recently, Sivaraman et al have come forward with a smartphone-coupled device capable of capturing widefield images of the retina beyond the posterior pole, with a field of view of 65° with a single take ( 438 ).…”

[6][7][8] This labor-intensive process of manual grading is overburdening physicians. Artificial intelligence (AI)-based software has therefore been deployed for screening images.…”
