A novel single-phase power factor correction scheme

Original scientific paperHigh-Brightness Light Emitting Diodes (HB-LEDs) are considered the future trend in lighting not only due to their high efficiency and high reliability, but also due to their other outstanding characteristics: chromatic variety, shock and vibration resistance, etc. Nevertheless, they need the development of new power supplies especially designed for boosting and taking advantage of their aforementioned characteristics. Besides, their behaviour is completely different from the rest of lighting devices and, consequently, it should be also taken into account in the design of the converters used to drive them. As a result, many well-known topologies have been optimized or redesigned in order to be used in LED-lighting applications and many new topologies have come up in the recent years with the same purpose.In this paper, the main HB-LED characteristics will be explained, highlighting how they influence the design of their power supplies. After, the main topologies will be presented from the simplest to the most complex ones, analysing their advantages and disadvantages. Svjetleće diode s visokom razinom svjetline (HB-LED) smatraju se budućim trendom u rasvjeti zahvaljujući ne samo visokom stupnju efikasnosti i pouzdanosti, nego i njihovim izvanrednim svojstvima: raznolikost boja, otpornost na udarce i vibracije i sl. Ipak, s ciljem potpunog iskorištenja prethodno spomenutih svojstava, potrebno je razviti nove, posebno osmišljene izvore napajanja. Osim toga, ponašanje im se posve razlikuje od ostalih tipova rasvjete što je potrebno uzeti u obzir pri projektiranju pretvarača za njihovo napajanje. Kao posljedica toga, mnoge su poznate topologije pretvarača optimirane ili preoblikovane posebno za primjenu u LED rasvjeti, a zadnjih nekoliko godina mnoge nove su se tek pojavile.U ovomčlanku objašnjena su osnovna HB-LED svojstva naglašavajući njihov utjecaj na razvoj izvora napajanja. Uz to, prikazane su osnovne topologije, od najjednostavnijih do najsloženijih, ujedno analizirajući prednosti i nedostatke pojedinih.

SUMMARYThis paper discusses the circuit theory aspects of power factor correction in switching converter circuits. The discussion begins with an examination of the requirement of power factor correction in dc=dc converters. Using the concept of zero-order converter circuits, su cient conditions for a dc=dc converter circuit to provide power factor correction are derived. The duality principle is applied to generate new converter circuits that can achieve power factor correction. The practical application of power factor correction is considered in conjunction with the requirement of tight output voltage regulation. Detailed study of the circuit conÿguration that can simultaneously provide power factor correction and output regulation is given. Based on a general three-port model, the voltage regulator with power factor correction capability is studied in terms of the power ow between the input port, output port and energy storage port. A detailed consideration of the power ow among the three ports leads to the derivation of all possible minimal conÿgurations that can achieve power factor correction and voltage regulation. The e ciencies of these minimal conÿgurations are studied theoretically, leading to the concept of 'reduced redundant power processing' which provides important clue to e ciency improvement. Another issue addressed in this paper is the synthesis of practical circuits that can provide power factor correction and output regulation. In particular, four practical minimal conÿgurations that achieve reduced redundant power processing are considered. A systematic synthesis procedure is derived for creating converter circuits that achieve power factor correction and output voltage regulation. The control issue is also investigated in depth, pinpointing the basic requirement on the number of control parameters needed and its relationship with the operating mode.

Abstract-This paper discusses the characteristics of powerfactor-correction (PFC) switching regulators of non-cascading structures in terms of efficiency, input current harmonic distortion, and load transient response. The discussion begins with simplified power flow diagrams of the non-cascading PFC switching regulators and describes their essential features for achieving power factor correction and tight voltage regulation. Based on these diagrams, the various configurations of switching regulators can be classified into three categories, each offering a different possibility of performance tradeoffs. The first category permits tradeoff between efficiency and input current harmonic contents, the second permits tradeoff between efficiency and load transient response, and the third allows tradeoffs among all performance areas. The paper briefly reviews the non-cascading structures of PFC switching regulators in terms of the three categories. Simulation and experimental results are provided to illustrate the performance tradeoffs in these PFC switching regulators.
