A Novel Selenocystine-Accumulating Plant in Selenium-Mine Drainage Area in Enshi, China

Abstract: Plant samples of Cardamine hupingshanesis (Brassicaceae), Ligulariafischeri (Ledeb.) turcz (Steraceae) and their underlying top sediments were collected from selenium (Se) mine drainage areas in Enshi, China. Concentrations of total Se were measured using Hydride Generation-Atomic Fluorescence Spectrometry (HG-AFS) and Se speciation were determined using liquid chromatography/UV irradiation-hydride generation-atomic fluorescence spectrometry (LC-UV-HG-AFS). The results showed that C. hupingshanesis could accum… Show more

“…Analysis of Se speciation was performed according to the method by Bañuelos et al (2011) and Yuan et al (2013). The whole shoots were extracted with 100 mM Tris-HCl buffer (pH 7.5) in an ultrasonic tank for 10 min and then enzyme Protease XIV was then added to shake for 24 h at 37°C.…”

“…Apparently, absorbed selenate induced diverse enzymatic activities because the data indicated by several unknown species appearing exclusively after selenate application (Table 6). Surprisingly, Yuan et al (2013) revealed SeCys2 (possibly SeCys2 + SeCys) as the predominant species in Cardamine sp. (a novel Se-hyperaccumulator) grown in a Se mining area, which contradicts the current conception of plant Se metabolism along with the defense mechanism against substantial SeCys build-up in a cell.…”

“…Only SeCys 2 was detected in mature seeds, up to 1081 mg/kg as Se. A research of Yuan et al (2013) also indicated that over 70% of the total accumulated Se was in the form of selenocystine (SeCys 2 ) in Se-enriched Cardamine hupingshanesis (Brassicaceae). While inorganic Se is dominant during early growth period, with concentrations of 6.6 mg/kg of Se (IV) and 386.7 mg/kg of Se (VI) in seedling frond, and 3.7 mg/kg of Se (IV) and 87.2 mg/kg of Se (VI) in half mature frond.…”

“…In this plant the Se-concentration reached 1427 mg/kg (Shao et al, 2007). Later Yuan (2013) also discovered a novel Se secondary accumulator (Cardamine hupingshanesis) in the same area.…”
