A novel scheme to resolve PCI conflicts and assignment problems in LTE-femtocell networks

Abstract: Physical Cell Identity (PCI) assignments and conflicts are still posing huge challenges in the LTE-femtocell based network. This challenges stem from the problem of only 504 unique PCls are available in the LTE network. In this work we propose an approach to solve this problem with minimum needs of human intervention, besides preserving the network resources by discarding the need of periodically updating the network neighbor list and also discarding the need to resolve searching conflict and healing.

“…Table 1 shows the summary of major existing works on SON and bioinspired approaches in wireless networks. Geolocation based allocation [8,9], game-theory based minimum collision assignment [7], and graph coloring optimization [3,4] [13,15]. Bioinspired solutions have been used in wireless networks for scheduling and resource allocation [16,17], optimal cell planning [18], BS deployment [18], and load balancing [19].…”

“…However there is still a room for improvements. Here we review some of these works that discussed the PCI assignment and conflict [11,12].Starting with Jae Seung Song et al Where the authors focused in their proposed work [6] on one of management problems, which is the self-configuration of PCIs for femtocell where they proposed a model-checking to help formal correctness verification to verify the correctness of the Self-configuration assignments process. This approach has the ability of searching for error in the configuration starting from partial configuration state snapshot.…”

“…Wu et al [13] proposed a heuristic optimization model for PCI allocation in real-life LTE networks, demonstrating its effectiveness in reducing interference. The application of self-organizing networks (SONs) and novel algorithms to address PCI conflicts in LTE-femtocell networks has also been a focus of research [10,[15][16]. Abdullah et al [15] introduced a novel scheme to resolve PCI conflicts in LTE-femtocell networks, conserving network resources.…”
