A Novel Scheme for joint Multi-channel ECG-ultrasound image compression

Abstract: In this paper, we introduce a novel approach to compress jointly a Multi-Channel Electrocardiogram (MCE) and an ultrasound image. We will show that this technique allows better performances, in terms of compression ratio (CR) compared to coding separately both modalities. In this approach, scaled ECG samples are inserted within the high frequencies of the ultrasound image after its decomposition on wavelet basis. The new standard JPEG2000 is then applied on the packed data for both coding and decoding purpose.… Show more

“…Therefore, the perfect reconstruction of the input signal can be performed. In transform was successfully applied to conduct the insertion process [17][4] [6].The first multimodal compression using the wavelet transform was proposed in [17], and has been considered in a specific medical application. The signal is firstly modified by a scaling factor and inserted in the detail sub-band (HH) after achieving the DWT on the input image.…”

“…The insertion area is decimated to comprise the signal samples to be inserted, similar in construction to [17] with the difference of quantization process of signal samples. Note that the signal quantization process necessarily leads to provide a dynamic range similar to that of the input image.…”

“…This idea was the object of [7], in which scaled ECG samples are inserted within the high frequencies of the ultrasound image after its decomposition on wavelet basis, which means that one sacrifices the details carried by the coefficients replaced by the signal samples. This loss is accentuated as much as the compression ratio (CR) is low, which present a great limitation for this kind of applications where one has tendency to lossless compression.…”
