A novel route for preparation of PVC sheets with high UV irradiation resistance

Abstract: A novel acrylonitrile acrylate copolymer coating was proposed to improve the UV irradiation resistance of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) sheets. Its effect on the photoageing properties of the sheets was evaluated by means of Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), yellowness index test, and the oxygen permeability coefficient and mechanical properties measurement. The experimental results show that the novel acrylonitrile acrylate copolymer coating significantly improve… Show more

“…Photooxidization and elimination of hydrogen chloride to form conjugated polyene structures are two major chemical reactions during the UV degradation of PVC. Thus, carbonyl index (CI) and polyene index (PI) are introduced to evaluate the photooxidization degree and could be characterized as follows : Carbonyl index=(ACOA2920) Polyene index=(ACCA2920) …”

“…Here, the peak area of carbonyl group and polyene group is determined in the range of 1800–1670 cm −1 , and 1550–1670 cm −1 , respectively; while 2920 cm −1 that belongs to the C‐H stretching is introduced to eliminate the difference in experiment conditions and operate‐factors.…”

“…Polymeric materials, which are exposed to solar ultraviolet (UV) radiation, heat, and moisture, despite of other stress parameters, degrade through processes known as weathering . Weathering of polymeric materials has been the most challenging issue in recent years and due to the increasing use of these substances, their degradation or stability processes has become an area of intense investigations . Among these materials, poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) with a huge production rate (34 million tons per year) and its good properties such as low production cost, good process ability, and easy modification have been the most interested polymeric materials in research area to study its degradation and stability features .…”

“…Reversed phenomenon was observed when PVC was blended with chloride polyethylene (CPE) or acrylic resin (ACR) 9. Ye et al16 found that the chromatic aberration was inevitable even though a high ultraviolet (UV) resistance coating was covered on the PVC sheet. Matuana found that the ▵ L *, ▵ a *, ▵ b *, and ▵ E * values of PVC and PVC/wood composite changed notably after photo‐aging.…”
