A Novel Real-Time Searching Method for Power System Splitting Boundary

Abstract: It is possible to prevent collapse of the whole post-fault power system, which is in unstable condition, by determining the splitting boundary so as to calm down the system oscillation. A fast method of searching for the splitting boundary of power system controlled islanding is presented in this paper, the aim of which is to minimize the load-generation imbalance in each island. The method contains three phases, namely, defining the domain of each generator according to power flow tracing algorithm, determini… Show more

“…But some possible solutions might be omitted, i.e., the substantial portion of the compression space may make some possible solutions lost. Reference [13] simplifies the splitting searching space by the active power flow tracing algorithm, which also may result in the loss of some feasible solutions. References [14,15] proposed the CLPSO and ACO intelligent algorithms to solve the problem, but neither of them has been verified in a large grid.…”

“…In this paper, experiments are conducted on a PC machine with 1.8 GHz CPU and 2 G memory based on PSS/E version 33 platform. The CISG stage costs less than 0.01 s and the SOSB stage costs 0.08 s, so the total time is less than 0.1 s. In the SOSB stage compared with the spectral clustering method in [13,14] and OBDD method in [9], the results are shown in Table 1.…”

“…The ICI problem can be modelled as a constrained combinatorial optimization problem and its complexity increases exponentially with the size of the system [6][7][8][9][10][11]. Hence, determining an islanding solution in real-time, i.e., quickly enough to ensure effective islanding within a limited timeframe, is an extremely complex analytical and practical problem [12,13].…”

“…The ICI methods aim to determine in real-time (a few seconds in practice [12]) a set of branches that must be disconnected across the network to create stable and sustainable islands [5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13]. When determining this set of lines, multiple constraints, such as generator coherency, load-generation balance, thermal limits,…”
