CO2 methanation has great potential for the better utilization of existing carbon resources via the transformation of spent carbon (CO2) to synthetic natural gas (CH4). Alkali and alkaline earth metals can serve both as promoters for methanation catalysts and as adsorbent phases upon the combined capture and methanation of CO2. Their promotion effect during methanation of carbon dioxide mainly relies on their ability to generate new basic sites on the surface of metal oxide supports that favour CO2 chemisorption and activation. However, suppression of methanation activity can also occur under certain conditions. Regarding the combined CO2 capture and methanation process, the development of novel dual-function materials (DFMs) that incorporate both adsorption and methanation functions has opened a new pathway towards the utilization of carbon dioxide emitted from point sources. The sorption and catalytically active phases on these types of materials are crucial parameters influencing their performance and stability and thus, great efforts have been undertaken for their optimization. In this review, we present some of the most recent works on the development of alkali and alkaline earth metal promoted CO2 methanation catalysts, as well as DFMs for the combined capture and methanation of CO2.

Summary We systematically studied the thermochemical behaviors of alkali metals under the carbon dioxide (CO2) atmosphere and first investigated the hydromethanation performance of the alkali metal carbonate@carbon product formed in the reaction of CO2 with alkali metals. The on‐set reaction temperature of alkali metals with CO2 is at about 466, 584, and 595°C, respectively, following Li < Na < K. The experimental results indicate that COx‐free methane can be selectively and efficiently generated by hydrogenation of these carbonate@carbon composites at 450°C without a catalyst. Among these carbonate@carbon composites, the Li2CO3@carbon composite shows superior methanation performance. The selectivity of methanation is near 100%. The yield and content of methane are able to reach 30.3% and 26.6 mol%, respectively. This work provides an alternative method to produce methane, utilizing CO2 resources.

Considering the global objective to mitigate climate change, import efforts are made on decreasing the net emission of CO 2 from gas effluents. On the one hand CO 2 capture-for example by adsorption onto solid basic materials-allows to withdraw CO 2 from the waste gas streams emitted by incinerators, cement manufacture plants, combustion plants, power plants, etc. On the second hand, CO 2 can be converted to useful chemicals-e.g. hydrogenation to methane-using appropriate heterogeneous catalysts. A relatively innovative strategy consists in combining both technologies by designing materials and processes which can switch between capture and methanation modes cyclically. This allows treating complex waste gas effluents by selectively and reversibly capturing CO 2 , and to perform the catalytic hydrogenation in appropriate reaction conditions. This short review presents the main strategies recently reported in the literature for such combined CO 2 capture and methanation (CCCM) processes. We discuss the different types of reactor configurations and we present the formulations used in this context as adsorbent, as methanation catalysts, and as "dual functional materials".
