Summary In this work, sulfur‐doped graphene‐coated electrodes are prepared by cyclic voltammetry in different potential ranges and different cycles (from 10 to 50) for selective modification of electrodes by different functional groups. The prepared electrodes are characterized by spectroscopic, microscopic and electrochemical methods. In scanning electron microscopic analysis, formation of graphene layers and their porous structure have been determined. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopic and cyclic voltammetric analyses are also used in electrochemical characterization of the electrodes. Then, the prepared sulfur‐doped graphene‐coated electrodes by using cyclic voltammetry in one‐step and low cost are used as electrode materials of supercapacitor for the first time in the literature. Since the mesoporous structure of the electrodes prepared in lower potential ranges increases, specific capacitance of the electrodes increases from 74 to 1833 mF cm−2 with 10 mA cm−2 current density. This result shows that specific capacitances of prepared electrodes are higher than those of the electrodes prepared with metal‐doped in the literature.

A novel gel electrolyte system used in lead-acid batteries was investigated in this work. The gel systems were prepared by addition of different amount of Al2O3, TiO2 and B2O3 into the gelled system consisting of 6 wt% fumed silica and 30 wt% sulfuric acid solution for the first time. The anodic peak currents and peak redox capacities of the gel electrolytes were characterized by cyclic voltammetric method. When B2O3 and Al2O3 were used as additives in fumed silica based gel electrolyte system, the anodic peak currents and peak redox capacities decreased. However, the investigated parameters in cyclic voltammetry (anodic peak current and capacities) increased by the adding of 3.0 wt% of TiO2 in the fumed silica based gel system. The solution and charge transfer resistances of the gel electrolytes were investigated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. While the solution resistances were lower in gel systems having different amount additives than pure fumed silica based gel, the charge transfer resistance was the lowest in gel electrolytes consisting fumed silica and fumed silica-TiO2. The morphological differences of gelled systems were elucidated by scanning electron microscopic and optic microscopic analysis. The battery performances were studied by obtaining discharge curves of prepared gel electrolytes. The performance of gelled systems were higher than that of non-gelled electrolyte at room temperature. The mixture of fumed silica-TiO2 was suggested an alternative gel formulation for gel valve-regulated lead acid batteries. TiO2 can be a useful additive for gel-VRLA batteries.

Ash‐Free Porous Carbon as the Negative Additive of Lead‐Acid Batteries and Supercapacitors

Herein, a simple method to prepare porous carbon that inhibits hydrogen evolution is used, which has enormous advantages for both capacitors and lead‐acid batteries. The quantitative filter paper spongy porous carbon (SQFPC) is successfully synthesized by the two‐step method. SQFPC displays a porous, spongy structure with a large specific surface area (1847 m2 g−1). In electrochemical tests, SQFPC exhibits high specific capacitance (244 F g−1 at 1 A g−1) and a capacitance retention rate of 72.5% at 40 A g−1. In addition, the capacity of the battery with 0.5 wt% SQFPC is improved by 57.6% at a discharge rate of 0.1C, and the cycle life under the high‐rate partial state of charge is 9.3 times that of the blank battery. The enhanced battery performance is related to the unique structure and surface functional groups of carbon, which speed up ion movement inside the battery and provide active sites for lead deposition.
