A Successive Optimization Approach to Pilot Design for Multi-Cell Massive MIMO Systems

Abstract-In this letter, we introduce a novel pilot design approach that minimizes the total mean square errors of the minimum mean square error estimators of all base stations (BSs) subject to the transmit power constraints of individual users in the network, while tackling the pilot contamination in multicell Massive MIMO systems. First, we decompose the original non-convex problem into distributed optimization sub-problems at individual BSs, where each BS can optimize its own pilot signals given the knowledge of pilot signals from the remaining BSs. We then introduce a successive optimization approach to transform each optimization sub-problem into a linear matrix inequality (LMI) form, which is convex and can be solved by available optimization packages. Simulation results confirm the fast convergence of the proposed approach and prevails a benchmark scheme in terms of providing higher accuracy.

The reuse of the same pilot group across cells to address bandwidth limitations in a network has resulted in pilot contamination. This causes severe inter-cell interference at the targeted cell. Pilot contamination is associated with multicell massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems which degrades the system performance even when extra arrays of antennas are added to the network. In this paper, we propose an efficient pilot assignment (EPA) scheme to address this issue by maximizing the minimum uplink rate of the target cell’s users. To achieve this, we exploit the large-scale characteristics of the fading channel to minimize the amount of outgoing inter-cell interference at the target cell. Results from the simulation show that the EPA scheme outperforms both the conventional and the smart pilot assignment (SPA) schemes by reducing the effect of inter-cell interference. These results, show that the EPA scheme has significantly improved the system performance in terms of achievable uplink rate and cumulative distribution function (CDF) for both signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR), and uplink rate.

In this paper, we propose a novel pilot power allocation method that focuses on the maximization of the energy efficiency. The core algorithm of this method, which is a dynamic approach that takes into account signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR), is called pilot power allocation polarizing SINRs (PS-PPA). The aim is to maximize the energy efficiency of the system along with the proposed pilot power allocation method using this algorithm in a multi-cell multi-user massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system. The algorithm determines difference between average SINR per cell and SINRs of users individually, during the scan of the whole cells sequentially. Therefore, it always updates the allocation for the latest SINR of users in power updates to improve the energy efficiency of the system. In power updates, PS-PPA calculates weights using an exponential function of the SINR difference. This weighting function is defined for each real number, so it can always result in a specific number. In addition, the weighting function is performed in the [ρ min ,ρ max ] range where the power values are predefined. The energy efficiency of the system is measured in a number of simulations by calculating the average SINR per cell. Furthermore, all these performance results are obtained for equal pilot power allocation (EPPA) and water-filling pilot power allocation (WF-PPA) schemes. As a result of simulation results, proposed pilot power allocation method has proven to be more superior than EPPA and WF-PPA methods.
