A Novel Photo‐oxetane From 6‐acetyluracil

Abstract: Abstract. Photolysis of 6‐acetyluracil (λ>300nm) in aqueous solutions produced a single major photoproduct, arising from a singlet excited state. This photoproduct has been isolated and characterized as a novel oxetane‐type dimer.

“…It is known that the stabilities of ascorbate complexes are weak due to the delocalization of the negative charge on HA and formation constants of the 1 : 1 complexes are in the range of 10 1 -10 3.6 at 25 C, as reported by Martell [37]. On the other hand, values for orotate complexes are around 10 6 -10 7 at this temperature [38].…”

“…Moreover, while they can be photolyzed at 313 nm (Patrick, 1970), the tRNA-rRNA complex was quite resistant (Table II). Other more complex adducts like those described by Sarpotdar & Burr (1978) are ruled out by their failure to be monomerized by short-wavelength UV light.…”

“…The photodimerization of dinucleotide analogues in which two pyrimidine bases are linked by a polymethylene bridge has been reviewed [20]. UV radiation ( > 300 nm) converts 6-acetyluracil to an unusual tetracyclic dimer containing an oxetane ring [57] and induces photocycloaddition of 5,7-dimethoxycoumarin across the 5,6-double bond of thymine [61]. Isobu tylene readily undergoes acetone-sensitized photoaddition to the 5,6-double bond of uracil derivatives to give cis-fused cyclobutane products in high yields [69].…”
