A novel phased‐concept course for the delivery of anatomy and orthopedics training in medical education

Abstract: Integration of anatomy and clinical teaching is a theoretical ideal, yet there is a worldwide paucity of such amalgamation. These teaching models provide support for medical trainees, an important element in Germany where orthopedic intern numbers have declined and anecdotal evidence suggests disinterest in orthopedics. The aim of the study was to develop an integrated anatomy-surgical course for undergraduate medical training, assess the model developed, and explore how medical students perceive orthopedics a… Show more

“…Trials for trauma and orthopedics workshops have rendered these tissues unsuitable in favor of establishing the Thiel method at the University of Otago. Here, Thiel has clear advantages concerning tissue pliability, joint range of motion, and the colorfastness of the tissues, especially for the course called “Surgical Exposures in Orthopedic and Trauma Surgery” and for the “Advanced Anatomy” course for more advanced medical students with particular interest in surgical topics (Hammer et al, 2015a,b; Klima et al, 2017) and intensivist training including (rescue) airway management.…”

“…Anatomy is an essential component of basic sciences and an important component of applied medical sciences. 1,[5][6][7][8][9][10] Globally it has been a concern to strengthen the basic anatomical demonstrations to increase interest among new first year students and simultaneously increase their clinical interests in different fields and management of simple pathologies associated with their anatomical demonstrations. 2-5 It has been seen that demonstrations by surgeons has given rise to increasing students' interests in subject but also increases their career planning in field of surgery.…”

“…7 Many authors have stressed on changing the method of teaching and curriculum and identifying factors influencing perception of medical students about surgeons and surgical career. [6][7][8][9][10] To achieve this goal, learning environment firstly should be favorable and information should be conveyed in a way where learner focus on understanding the reason behind factual information which is presented in textbooks. 11 Exposure of practicing surgeons with medical students will increase interaction and interest in surgical anatomy and surgical field.…”

“…Although there is little evidence in the literature to evaluate the effects of introducing elective courses in medical education and /or health sciences (Moxham and Pais, 2016), and the course under study is not comparable with the optional dissection courses taught in medical degree programs, these still have one aspect in common, namely that they overcome deficiencies in anatomy, especially in the practical environment. Klima et al (2017), Pais et al (2017), Eppler et al (2018) all attempted to evaluate the contribution of short dissection training courses, the work climate, course organization, clinical elements, and the results obtained in the evaluation. The results of the present study were similar with respect to satisfaction, knowledge acquisition, and skills to other practical and optional courses aimed at occupational therapists (Mohedano‐Moriano et al, 2019).…”
