A novel N-chlorotaurine–corticosteroid combination as a preservative-free local disinfectant: Influence on the ciliary beat frequency in vitro

Abstract: The combination of 1% NCT + 0.5 mg/ml FP decreased the CBF to 42.17% of its original value after 20 min. Treatment with BAC lowered the CBF depending on the concentration to 96.61% of its original value with 0.04 mg/ml, to 91.90% with 0.1 mg/ml, to 63.46% with 0.2 mg/ml and to 0% with 0.5 mg/ml. After rinsing in saline, the CBF of samples treated with 1% NCT + 0.5 mg/ml FP recovered to 68.93% of its original value.

“…The effectiveness of mucociliary clearance is influenced by CBF, the composition of mucus and anatomic structures. 12,[15][16][17] A disturbed mucociliary clearance leads to recurrent episodes of acute and potentially chronic rhinosinusitis, bronchitis, and otitis media. 18,19 Therefore, it is important not to disturb this defense mechanism.…”

“…A disturbance of the mucociliary clearance can lead to recurrent sinusitis and in succession to chronic rhinosinusitis. 12 However, data on the consequences of herbal extracts, e.g. , essential and fatty oils, on ciliary beat frequency (CBF) of human nasal epithelial cells are missing in the literature.…”

“…Since elevated amounts of serum neopterin were reported in patients with acute respiratory tract infections, we speculated that the pteridine compound might be involved in short-term inflammatory events taking place in the surroundings of the nasal mucosa, thus affecting mucociliary clearance. Any disturbance of CBF may result in recurrent episodes of acute infectious processes and may finally lead to permanent events such as chronic rhinosinusitis, otitis media, and bronchitis (12)(13)(14). To date, there is no established practical approach to evaluate CBF in vivo.…”

“…In the nasal tract, the effectiveness of mucociliary clearance is predominantly given by ciliary beat frequency (CBF). Any disturbances in mucociliary clearance can lead to recurrent sinusitis potentially evolving into chronic rhinosinusitis, bronchitis, and otitis media (12)(13)(14). Elevated circulating levels of neopterin were found in patients with acute respiratory tract infections (15) and in ambulatory volunteers recruited within 24 h of developing symptoms of common cold (16).…”
