A novel mussel-inspired strategy toward superhydrophobic surfaces for self-driven crude oil spill cleanup

Abstract: A superhydrophobic fabric was first fabricated by a novel mussel-inspired strategy with the aid of folic acid and a low concentration of dopamine without any additional nanoparticle incorporation. A mini boat of this fabric can automatically recycle oil spills while floating freely on water.

“…These results were close to the research about superhydrophobic HNTs based phase change material composites via the surface modification of polydimethylsiloxane [6]. Oil/water separation technique is one of the most favorable methods of wastewater treatment [35,37]. Due to the abundant pore structures and high surface area, HNTs may be used as an Oil/water separation technique is one of the most favorable methods of wastewater treatment [35,37].…”

“…The secondary reaction to graft long-chain and anti-water alkylamine on PDA layers can introduce rough structure into HNTs substrates, which was the crucial factor for building superhydrophobic surfaces. However, the smooth PDA coatings obtained by typical method can hardly form primary obvious hierarchical structure, thus with the following secondary reaction, only hydrophobic surfaces would be achieved [35]. Various nanoparticles including noble metal (Ag) [36], metallic oxide (Fe 3 O 4 ) [37], and silicon oxide [38] were incorporated through the catechol coordinate bonds and hydrogen bonds to create primary hierarchical structures on HNTs surfaces, however, this most-used approach suffered from a lot of disadvantages, such as high cost, time-consuming, and poor stability.…”

“…Several water sources for our daily lives and industries typically contain oil, which has become the most common pollutant worldwide. In recent years, it is possible to find a large amount of research work about membranes for the treatment of oily wastewater in the literature, not only in experimental but also in theoretical terms [3][4][5][6][7] . One of the major problems of the industries is the treatment of the effluent before being discharged in the environment or in a public sewage system.…”
