A Novel Monopulse Technique for Adaptive Phased Array Radar

Abstract: The monopulse angle measuring technique is widely adopted in radar systems due to its simplicity and speed in accurately acquiring a target’s angle. However, in a spatial adaptive array, beam distortion, due to adaptive beamforming, can result in serious deterioration of monopulse performance. In this paper, a novel constrained monopulse angle measuring algorithm is proposed for spatial adaptive arrays. This algorithm maintains the ability to suppress the unwanted signals without suffering from beam distortion… Show more

“…In [7][8][9][10][11][12][13], a performance analysis considering the deviation of the estimated angle of the target expressed as measurement noise and a performance analysis by internal error were conducted. In addition, various monopulse algorithms have been proposed to improve the angle estimation accuracy in the presence of noise and interfering signals.…”

“…Conventionally, adaptive beamforming is proposed to suppress unwanted signals such as noise, but this technique causes beam distortion. The new monopulse algorithm proposed in [12] acquires the target angle without distorting the beam shape. In addition, in order for the monopulse radar seeker to increase the angle measurement accuracy in the low signalto-noise ratio (SNR) environment, the authors of [13] proposed an estimation algorithm based on the Bayesian framework.…”

“…Monopulse antennas configurations have been widely designed with array and multi-aperture schemes [10][11][12][13][14][15][16][17], which provide high gain of sum beam and deep radiating null in the detecting direction. Meanwhile, a feeding network with high complexity is required with the increase of element number [18][19][20].…”

“…Butler Matrix has the ability to form orthogonal beams, lossless property and high beam crossover level [10][11][12][13]. Due to these extraordinary properties, four ports beam-steering Butler Matrix with slotted waveguide antenna array are identified as a breakthrough for 5G communication networks as they can enable beam switching to the targeted users while suppressing unwanted signal [14,15] without having to compromise in the size limitation and diversify application.…”
