A Novel Model for Optimized Development and Application of Switching Valves in Closed Loop Control

Abstract: In this paper a novel and validated model to describe the dynamics of switching valves is presented and used to analyse the behaviour of switching valves. The paper starts with a brief discussion of the state of the art and the characteristics of switching valves, continuing with investigations of their dynamics, the development of the novel model and an analysis of the characteristics of switching valves based on the introduced model. The different operation modes which appear when fast switching control sign… Show more

“…Due to their response dynamics and the small control error in the desired rest positions, the digital valves are not fully switched anymore, in other words, they act in a so-called ballistic mode. 38 Shrinking a dead band around the desired rest position, an arbitrary accuracy can be achieved, at least theoretically. In practice, the achievable accuracy is mainly influenced by the design of the valves and their dynamic switching, the load pressure, and the sample time of the signal processing unit.…”

“…The valve opening op can have a value between 0 and 1. Opening and closing dynamics of the valve armature are modeled based on three parameters: 1) delay, 2) movement time, and 3) sticking time as detailed in [22]. This model describes realistically the valve operation in practically any condition.…”

“…Possible solutions to replace the traditional 4/3 directional controlled valve used in hydraulic systems to control the motion of an actuator include: (1) Displacement control actuation [11,12], (2) independent metering control [13,14], and (3) digital hydraulics [15][16][17][18]. Each of these solutions has its own strengths and weaknesses.…”
